Ofsted visited us in November 2024 and found that –
Comberton Village College is a place where pupils truly thrive. Inspectors highlighted our exceptionally high expectations for conduct and achievement, noting that pupils rise confidently to meet them and embody our values of being caring, confident and capable. They recognised a community where every pupil is supported to succeed, where voices are heard, and where pupils look out for one another as responsible, compassionate ‘upstanders’.
They praised pupils’ excellent behaviour, attendance and respectful attitudes, as well as the exceptional breadth of opportunities available. From crochet to robotics, debating to international work experience, pupils benefit from an inspiring range of clubs, trips and visiting speakers that broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the wider world.
Ofsted found our curriculum to be ambitious, broad and expertly designed. They noted that staff leave no stone unturned in ensuring pupils gain the knowledge they need, resulting in consistently strong outcomes. Pupils are not simply prepared for exams; they develop the skills and understanding to become accomplished scientists, historians, artists and more. This ambition extends to all pupils, including those with SEND, who flourish through our inclusive ethos and the exceptional support provided in areas such as The Cabin.
Inspectors highlighted the precision of our curriculum planning, the clarity of teaching and the strength of staff subject knowledge. They recognised how effectively teachers check learning, address misconceptions and provide detailed feedback that helps pupils know more and remember more. They also praised the way staff skilfully adapt learning so that every pupil can access the full breadth and depth of the curriculum.
Reading was identified as a significant strength. Pupils read widely and often, and those who need extra help receive expertly delivered support that enables them to catch up quickly and engage fully with the curriculum.
Sixth-form students were described as hugely positive about their experience. Inspectors noted the high-quality study support, the engaging enrichment programme and the many ways students contribute to school life, such as mentoring younger pupils. As a result, students leave exceptionally well prepared for their next steps.
Behaviour expectations were found to be clear and consistently upheld. Pupils strive to be the best they can be, and learning is rarely disrupted. Where support is needed, staff work tirelessly to help pupils improve.
Personal development was judged exceptional. The PSHE curriculum equips pupils with vital knowledge about relationships, wellbeing, equality and diversity. Leadership opportunities—such as becoming prefects or running clubs—prepare pupils extremely well for adulthood.
Finally, Ofsted commended the strong leadership across the school and trust. Trustees and leaders were recognised for their relentless drive to refine and improve the school’s work, involving pupils, parents, carers and staff in the process. Staff benefit from high-quality professional development and excellent support for wellbeing and workload, contributing to very low turnover.
Overall, Ofsted’s findings reflect a vibrant, ambitious and caring school community where pupils are exceptionally well supported to succeed and flourish.
